9 Essentials for a Mobile Friendly Recruitment Website With the Mobile Operators Association  stating that 57% of adults used their mobile phones for internet access in Q1  or 2014 and 3 in 5 job seekers (60%) are now using  mobile devices to search for jobs according to Social Talent, making your online presence  mobile-friendly has never been as important as a recruiter. Newman Stewart recently launched a new  website which is responsive to the device you are viewing it on. A great deal  of time and effort was spent on the design and development to ensure that the  end user has a seamless experience whether on a desktop or on the go via a  tablet or smart phone. Here are the top  9 things we learnt and considered during the development process: 1) Which platform? If you are developing a responsive  website rather that a mobile specific website or app then make sure that you  constantly review the site on all platforms and in both landscape and portrait  on a smartphone or tablet. A specific design may look great on a desktop or in  a particular position but a change of device or of the orientation may change  the concept entirely. 2) 30 seconds to apply: As mentioned above 3 in 5 jobseekers are doing so via their  mobile, but it isn?t enough just to make your vacancies easy to view on a smart  phone or tablet. In order to increase the number of applicants you must also  make the application process mobile friendly and as easy as possible. In order to do this we introduced the ability  to add a CV via Dropbox (as few people have their CV actually on their mobile  devices) and added a postcode finder so that applicants need to type in very  little of their personal details from scratch in order to register. 3) Me ?me? me:   Not only are more people applying for jobs on the move,  their attention spans are also getting increasingly shorter. If a user is  unable to find the relevant information they are looking for straight away it  is unlikely that they will stay on your website for very long and there is even  less chance that they will revisit your site in the future. Therefore the navigation of a website is extremely  important. The user must be able to find the relevant content in a few clicks  and the path must be clearly sign posted. We split our site into a client and  candidate section and added an area for each of our divisions so that all the  relevant information the user needs can be found in one area depending on their  background. Clients, jobs and testimonials are also tagged as they are entered  on to the site so that information for each division is dragged into the  relevant section from the main hub of the site automatically. 4) Don?t make it hard: People?s time is increasingly precious. Trawling through  pages and pages of irrelevant jobs is an annoyance. In order to keep job seekers engaged they  need to be able to find the relevant jobs that fit their requirements quickly. We introduced functionality so that users can search our available positions by  division, salary and location and also allow them to sign up to job alerts so  they are contacted directly if any suitable positions for their needs become  available. 5) Read all about it: Providing regular content which is useful to your clients  and candidates is essential to any modern marketing strategy. We used the  opportunity to introduce features so that our articles, blogs and news could be tagged and grouped easily by users into specific categories. Also to increase  our ability to engage with our users we added the ability to add comments and  feedback on our content and made it easy to share our content with others via  email, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus.  This not only allows the chance for our  articles to be seen by as many relevant people as possible, it also contributes  to SEO and gives users a reason to revisit the site as new content is regularly  being added. 6) Can you feel it? The challenge that recruitment companies and other service  providers have is how do you demonstrate your service through a still visual  platform? How do you make it more tangible? As well as blogs, which can be used to  demonstrate your expertise in the recruitment process and the sectors in which  you operate, adding testimonials, case studies and survey results from  satisfied clients and candidates is essential. At a minimum a name must be  attached to a testimonial, but by adding a photo or a video with the author?s  permission will increase their credibility.  If you are adding survey results it is important to be  transparent in order to build trust. Don?t just include glowing reviews. You  don?t have to include negative quotes but by addressing the areas where you can  make improvements not only demonstrates that you want to continually improve  your services, but also that you actively listening to your customers. 7) Look after your  insides: As well as the user functionality we also used the  opportunity during the website development to look at ways to improve our  in-house processes. We integrated the website with our job-boards management  platform and introduced automated data transfer from the website into our CRM  system to reduce the amount of admin we need to carry out internally. 8) Everybody?s juggling: There are a lot of stake holders involved in the development  of a new website from Directors and employees through to IT support, CRM  suppliers, your job-boards management software provider and the web developers  themselves. It doesn?t matter how much  you project plan, changes will occur at every stage and there will usually be a  knock on effect from one contributor to the next.  Your developer may need your CRM supplier to  test something, but before that happens your IT supplier might need to change the  permissions settings behind the scenes. External suppliers will obviously have  other clients so your job will be prioritised and certain areas of the  development may stall until certain pieces of the puzzle are complete. 9) It never ends?: The launching of a new website is only the beginning, it  isn?t the end. In order for a site to be as effective as possible new content  such as testimonials, blogs and videos need to be regularly added, the  effectiveness of your SEO needs to be monitored and tailored, and feedback  needs to be sort and alterations made in order for your website to be the best  promotional tool for your business and for users to experience the best service  that the platform can offer. So that is our guide to what we learnt while developing a  mobile friendly recruitment website. If we had to do it all again what would we  do different? We wouldnt underestimate  the amount of time it takes to develop, test, amend and retest, but now it is complete  we are extremely pleased with the final results and we?re confident users will  find using the site a pleasant experience no matter what device they are viewing  it on.

The Masks Worn by Recruitment Consultants The blurry lines of social media mean the mask many people wear in business are slipping and I wonder whether this is a good thing for recruitment or not? I personally have always cited that I am the same person whether you meet me on a Saturday lunchtime or in a business meeting- bar I may be slightly more stressed on a Saturday playing my daughters’ social secretary and ferrying them around from horse riding to parties to play dates!  Social media has obviously changed everyone’s lives now- I am not debating here whether that is a positive or negative observation- however, when I speak to anyone- prospective client or candidate; the first thing I do before speaking if it is a planned call, or straight after if it is a reactive call- is get straight on to LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter to follow them. I do this, not for contrived reasons, but to genuinely allow myself to build a clear picture of who they  are. Ok, so it is also because I am nosey and want to see what they have had for lunch (Instagram), where they have been and who with (Facebook), what they are bothered about (Twitter) and what job they do (LinkedIn).  But this means that there needs to be a consistency in that representation. Do you maintain a professional image? I met a chap last year who had been referred by another client they had interviewed him and although were very impressed with him and his potential, mutually agreed that their environment just wasn’t best suited. I met this candidate and was also very impressed, so we agreed to work together exclusively to find him his recruitment role. I was slower to get on Facebook than my client though  (we had met at 10am and by 12pm this client had agreed to see him- I wasn’t even back from the venue I had met him in yet!) and they called me straight back and said, “omg, have you seen his cover pic on facebook?”. I replied “erm NO, not yet as I am still sat in the hotel where I met him.”. I quickly logged on to my facebook, found the candidate and saw (with part horror, part humour) that his cover pic featured him semi-naked in a pose with the words “F*CK YOU” ablaze across the top. Hmm. Not exactly the professional image he was hoping to portray. Should we censor ourselves? What is the moral of this? Should we each censor our facebook tags- ensuring there are no embarrassing pics of us on drunken nights out?  Or should this culture we live in, which embraces freedom to be individual- anything goes these days?- encourage us all to behave with honesty in professional contexts too? I have always been known for honesty and clearly advocate this approach to all professionals. But is there a fine line between the image we wish to portray to accelerate us in a business arena, to the person we really are? Just be you: Perhaps as I run my own business, my brand is me, I am my brand, I am approaching this from a different angle to someone who is employed and paid by a company who wish to be known for employing a certain type of person.. but is there any harm in just being YOU consistently and not trying to upsell, behave as a professional chameleon and just be as down to earth as you can be? It hasn’t done me any harm. In fact, I am bold enough to say, by just simply being ME and not adopting any fake stance, portrayal or persona, it has actually become a reason why people do work with me? What do you think? Ten Quick Resume Tweaks That Will Improve Your Executive Job Search When I’m working with my six- and seven-figure executive clients, I often notice certain resume hiccups that detract from their main message of value when communicating with hiring authorities. By making some easy and subtle yet powerful changes, executive search candidates can frequently accelerate their interactions with decision makers and expedite their searches.Here are my top 10 suggestions.1. Fix that email address. Nothing will date you faster than an email address that is associated with a company that peaked before the 21st century. Rather than using your prehistoric AOL or Yahoo address, create a Gmail account for your job search activities. Consider it part of the normal technology evolution process. You parted with your rotary phone, fax machine and Blackberry. You can let go of this, too.2. List your cell phone rather than your home phone. This is another dinosaur. Even if you still have a home phone, isn’t your cell phone the best way to reach you? You want to be a vailable to recruiters and hiring managers quickly; it makes sense to give them the fastest way to contact you.3. Eliminate subjective words and descriptions of personal attributes from your resume summary. These words do little to position your value to an employer. Nix words like seasoned or veteran (translation: old), high energy (translation: you sound insecure) and accomplished (youd better be; you’re a senior executive). Replace these with a synopsis of career highlights where you helped the companies you supported make money, save money, save time, grow the business or keep the business. Showcase tangible skills (e.g., turned around three companies, led 12 acquisitions, took $6 million of expenses out of the business, etc.) to validate your worth to an employer.4. Step out of the 90s and update your resume format. Perhaps the last time you updated your resume, there were few design options. But Microsoft Word has come a long way. Use charts, graphics and color to convey you r impact, just like you do in your executive role when you create reports to influence senior management, the board, investors, customers, etc. Decision makers respond well to these visual cues, too.5. Get rid of scholarships and honors you earned as an undergraduate. You’ve been running a multimillion-dollar PL and achieving incremental growth for your company for years. Is that Presidents Scholarship or summa cum laude distinction from 1988 really still relevant?6. Stop getting caught up in semantics. Sometimes my executive clients feel uncomfortable taking credit for accomplishments that they directed but didn’t carry out on their own. As a result, they fail to list some of their most outstanding accomplishments. Hiring managers understand that, in many cases, you had a team behind you to execute on a strategy, but if you feel clarification is necessary, try using language that shows your instrumental role in an initiative, such as, “Created the business transformation stra tegy that the team executed to reduce costs by $3 million,” or, “Hired the C-level talent necessary to optimize the sales process and realize $5 million in new business in less than nine months.”7. De-bloat your resume. No one is interested in that third page. Three pages don’t translate into “accomplished.” Instead, they signal, can’t articulate what’s most important, can’t let the past go, insecure that recent accomplishments won’t measure up, or too old (or expensive) to have a place here. Dedicate most of your precious resume real estate to showcasing your last 10-15 years of employment; truncate earlier experiences to one or two accomplishments or simply a list of the early companies/positions to show career progression.8. Get your LinkedIn on. Perhaps you were too busy in your last role to jump on the LinkedIn bandwagon, or maybe you thought having a presence there wasn’t necessary. If you are in a job search, having a LinkedIn profile is imperative. Donâ €™t create a profile that merely lists the companies you worked for and your job titles. Make it rich with specific information about your key accomplishments, build out the skills section to make it easier for recruiters and hiring managers to find you, and link to media mentions or examples of your success where appropriate. Additionally, be sure to engage there. Monitor your feed, make new connections, join groups and comment or share other people’s content to deepen relationships and build rapport with important influencers within your professional community.9. Make sure the picture is recent. I’ve looked at people’s LinkedIn pictures before a formal meeting with them and then barely recognized the person who showed up for the meeting. Don’t make that mistake. Using a picture that is more than 10 years old or no longer looks like you is deceptive and can potentially damage the relationship you are trying to create before it has even started. A little bit of makeup (and y es, even a touch of Photoshop) are fine, but a picture of you taken before the Clinton administration is probably not.10. Update your software. If you created your resume on an older version of Microsoft Word (anything before 2003), you risk the chance of sending your document to a decision maker and having it show up on their screen with compromised formatting. Get an updated version of Microsoft Word and then convert your final resume to a PDF to ensure formatting displays consistently from computer to computer.Spend some time in the coming weeks making these subtle tweaks to your messaging, and watch the interest in your candidacy improve.This post was originally posted at Forbes.
